Vanashree was born from a simple fascination with nature, trees and birdlife. What began as a weekend pursuit gradually transformed into a lifelong journey of learning, restoration and sustainable living. Looking back over more than two decades, we realize that what started as an experiment with a small patch of ancestral land has profoundly changed the way we think about nature, agriculture and our relationship with the environment.

Our first experiments began at Ankura, a one-acre ancestral plot that had lain barren for decades. According to the local community, the land had lost its topsoil and had remained virtually devoid of vegetation for nearly thirty years. With little knowledge of farming but immense curiosity, we sought the guidance of our uncle, Prof. V. S. Sheshadri, former Head of Plant Pathology at the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bengaluru.

We owe much of our early success to his mentorship. More than teaching us agricultural techniques, he encouraged us to look at farming as an ecological system rather than merely a means of cultivation. He introduced us to organic farming, multi-cropping and the importance of working with nature instead of against it. His unwavering belief that we were on the right path gave us the confidence to persevere through the inevitable setbacks of those early years.

Those experiments would not have been possible without the support of Anjanappa, the caretaker of Ankura. His practical wisdom, willingness to experiment and tireless enthusiasm made him an invaluable partner in translating ideas into reality.

Encouraged by this transformation, we embarked on a much larger challenge—Vanashree in 2005

When we acquired the eight-acre site that would become Vanashree, it was little more than open land with just four surviving trees. Rather than simply developing a farm, we envisioned creating a living landscape where forests, orchards, agriculture, wildlife and people could coexist in harmony.

Over the years, Vanashree has evolved into far more than a farm. Thousands of trees have been planted, native biodiversity has steadily returned and every season continues to teach us new lessons. Rainwater harvesting, soil regeneration, organic cultivation, mixed farming and ecological restoration have become integral parts of our everyday life. The farm is continually evolving, reminding us that nature is never static—it is always growing, adapting and renewing itself.

Books have played a profound role in shaping our philosophy. Among the earliest influences was Prof. B. G. L. Swamy’s Hasiru Honnu, a delightful introduction to the world of plants. Equally influential was Poornachandra Tejaswi’s Sahaja Krishi, inspired by the timeless work of Masanobu Fukuoka in One-Straw Revolution. Fukuoka’s philosophy of natural farming fundamentally changed the way we viewed agriculture—not as an exercise in controlling nature, but as a practice of understanding and collaborating with it. His ideas continue to inspire us even today.

Our journey has also been enriched by countless individuals and organizations committed to sustainable living. Conversations with natural farmers, environmentalists, educators and community leaders opened new perspectives and encouraged us to experiment with rainwater harvesting, renewable energy, biodiversity conservation and simple living. Every visit, every discussion and every friendship added another piece to the evolving story of Vanashree.

What began as a personal journey has gradually become a place where family, friends, students, professionals and fellow nature enthusiasts come together to reconnect with the natural world. Vanashree is increasingly becoming a space for conversations on sustainability, learning, innovation and community—where ideas can be exchanged, experiences shared and inspiration discovered.

The name Vanashree, meaning “the abundance and grace of the forest,” reflects both our aspiration and our responsibility. We believe that true prosperity lies not merely in what we harvest, but in what we restore. Every tree planted, every bird that returns and every visitor who leaves with a deeper appreciation for nature strengthens that belief.

Our journey continues. There is still much to learn, many more trees to nurture, countless ideas to explore and new generations to inspire. If there is one lesson that nature has taught us, it is that meaningful transformation takes time, patience and perseverance, but above all acceptance.

We invite you to be part of this continuing story—to walk through our forests, experience the rhythms of the farm, share ideas and join us in creating a future where people and nature flourish together.

Welcome to Vanashree.
